As of 2023, Egypt boasted nearly 85 million internet users, ranking second in Africa after Nigeria. This figure accounted for approximately 76% of Egypt's population, a significant increase from 54% in 2017. Despite being Africa's third most populous country, behind Nigeria and Ethiopia, Egypt's digital population stands out.

We expect the internet users to reach 102 million by 2028 accounting for 84.5% of total population.

Regarding internet speed, North Africa, including Egypt, had the slowest average download speed globally in 2023, with Egypt's mean speed at 9.75 megabits per second. This speed would take a five-gigabyte movie slightly over one hour and ten minutes to download.

The prevalence of mobile phones has facilitated internet access, with the majority of Egyptians using mobile devices to go online. As of mid-2022, nearly 69 million digital individuals accessed the internet via mobile, compared to just over 10 million ADSL subscribers. However, fixed broadband subscriptions have also increased significantly since the early 21st century, reaching almost 10 subscriptions per 100 individuals in 2021.

In terms of internet accessibility and quality, nearly 17 million households had internet access in 2023, with urban households showing higher rates of internet use compared to rural areas. Mobile phones were central to internet usage, and Egypt offered relatively low mobile internet prices in U.S. dollars.

The primary reasons for Egyptians to go online were staying in touch with friends and family, seeking information, and consuming video content. Search engines were the most visited websites, followed by video platforms, social media sites, and online stores. With the increasing digital population, online marketplaces have seen growth, with the e-commerce penetration rate reaching 39.4% in 2022, up from 18.1% in 2017. Cash-based payments dominated due to low banking penetration among the population.
