Ukraine had 30.7 million internet users at the end of 2023, accounting for an internet penetration rate of 86.3% of the total population of 33.2 million. This number is projected to grow by 1.4% to reach 30.7 million by 2028, with the online penetration rate expected to be 85.3% by then.
Internet connectivity speeds showed significant improvement, with the median mobile internet speed via cellular networks reaching 24.83 Mbps (a 121% increase from the previous year) and the median fixed internet speed hitting 73.68 Mbps (a 22.5% increase) in early 2024.
Social media adoption was widespread, with 24.30 million active social media users recorded in January 2024, equivalent to 64.9% of the total population. However, this represented a decrease of 9.0% compared to early 2023. Facebook emerged as the leading platform with 13.85 million users (37.0% of the population), followed by YouTube with 24.30 million users (64.9% of the population), Instagram with 12.40 million users (33.1% of the population), and TikTok with 16.47 million users aged 18 and above (53.9% of the adult population).
The number of cellular mobile connections stood at 55.64 million at the start of 2024, equivalent to 148.7% of the total population, indicating that many individuals have multiple mobile connections.
In terms of demographics, the median age of Ukraine's population was 44.3 years, with the largest age group being those aged 65 and above (20.1%), followed by those aged 35-44 (17.0%), 45-54 (15.4%), and 55-64 (15.0%). Additionally, 70.2% of the population lived in urban areas, while 29.8% resided in rural areas.
Overall, the data depicts a highly connected and digitally engaged population in Ukraine, with widespread adoption of internet services, social media platforms, and continuously improving connectivity speeds, despite a slight decline in social media usage compared to the previous year.
